Summary, etc.: | A biographical novel about the slave who became assistant to the great Spanish painter, Velazquez. Juan de Pareja was born into slavery, coming by inheritance to Velazquez in his youth, but a bond grew between the two. Prohibited from painting by his slave status, Juan accompanies Velazquez to Rome on a mission for the King of Spain. When Velazquez falls ill, Juan nurses him back to health and gets his portrait painted in gratitude. Velazquez ultimately learns of Juan's desire to be a painter, frees him from slavery, makes him studio assistant, and the two work together as friends to the painter's death. |
